Well, I wanted to add an IMAX tag – but that won’t happen, because I won’t see another IMAX film again. It was terrible; I left the theater so sick – you can’t even concentrate on the action sequences (which is part of the reason to see Spider-man in theaters). So that is my short rant – never see a non-IMAX movie in IMAX (i.e. Harry Potter: and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)). So there you have it, hopefully this won’t skew my review.
The movie to me was a mixed back. I’ll go right off the bat and say it isn’t as good as 2 or even 1 I believe. I think the biggest fault you could levy with it is that it was entirely TO many stories intertwined into a movie that just felt bloated. It should have been 2 movies honestly. I would have broken it down between New Goblin/Sandman and a Venom movie. But adding all 3 villains into a movie that tries to avoid convention makes it hard to give any time to any of the villains. So when there is a transformation in one it seems forced.
I also didn’t like the re-introduction credits of 2 (of course I didn’t like them in 2 either) who is watching these movies that hasn’t already seen them? Give me Spider-man 1 credits back! Oh and the last gripe is that the scene where Peter Park is walking through the park happy he is no longer Spider-man (in Spider-man 2) while overcast with a happy song is back in full force with a much stranger twist. Evil Peter Parker gives the movie more “depth” I think by giving a different direction for the movie to go in besides Spidey v. Villain X. However I don’t know if I would have done it that way (besides the Jazz scene is REALLY over the top and odd).
OK so what was good? I think Topher Grace as Venom actually did really well. He handled the sadistic evil whit really well. Playing off Spider-man’s self sacrificing goodness with “happy” evil. Which is what was missing from the other villains who are evil for a reason. Venom just hates, he isn’t complex he just hates Peter Parker/Spiderman. Thomas Hayden Church is good as Sandman just under used I think. He also comes off paper thin when they tried to make a larger plot for him.
Some minor SPOILERS…
… The Spidey + New Green Goblin v. Sandman Venom sequence is really well done. I think I enjoy the New Goblin more than Spiderman. He definitely upped the cool factor (what ever factor that may be… I think it’s base 10). So this is a movie people will see regardless, I just hope it’s the last one. I think it reached it’s apex with Spider-man 2 and we saw that Spider-man 3 could have been a lot worse than it was. But I think a Spider-man 4 will just a blatant cash in if it’s made. The magic of Sam Raimi and the cameo’s of Bruce Campbell have run out I believe.
//Edit: Though if you need to, you can read this post The Gospel in Spider-man 3 by Team Pyro. Good semi clean fun.
//Second Update: Apparently there is pretty substantiated information on lots of missing scenes from S3. You can read it here on the RottenTomatoes.com forums.
//Third Update: In regards to the video game (which I have for the PS3) it’s a really fun game. I am confused as to all the negative reviews I’ve read. Sure the camera angle is horrible – but we’ve come to expect that in 3D games half the time. I find it fun, it’s fun to be Spider-man with no solid plot. You run around NYC flying through the air fighting crime and going after some of the bigger villians (The Lizard, New Goblin, Venom & Sandman etc). So I like it, plus with the collectors edition for the PS3 you can unlock the new Goblin to play as him – which would be pretty good. I though he was the best part of S3.

[...] So with that this movie was hailed as one of the greatest movies of 2006. Which looking back we had a pretty stellar year for movies. Far better than 2005. Let’s hope 2007 delievers more than just Summer Blockbusters (i.e. Spider-man 3 (2007)). [...]
